RESIDUE

I nearly killed someone last night.

Am I becoming just like the people in my photographs?

I have to show you what I’ve seen. What I know is happening.

Something bad is on the loose. Something unimaginable. And it leaves behind RESIDUE.

It’s the lingering psychic aftershock of the New Year’s Eve Catastrophe.

The ashes of our shattered self assurance.

The latent image of our own indifference and fear.

The lingering echo of lives changed forever.

Reminding us that nothing is what we thought it was.

But most importantly this residue is the stain left behind, the physical evidence that… monsters are among us.

It’s all here. On my website. In my photos. Look closely. Don’t turn away. You’ll see it.

I’m going to say it. I’m not going to hold back. I noticed something in my photos. A strange recurring phenomenon. I’ve checked them and rechecked them.

Can you tell me what that is? And that… and that… A bad chip? A flaw in my lens?

A bad printing job?

I’ve checked a million times. There’s nothing wrong with my camera.

I don’t know where they come from. What I do know is that in every one of my photos where they appear, something terrible happens.

This awful plague is that’s contaminating our city, it all starts in the Quarantine Zone.

That savage scar on the city’s psyche. That abandoned emptiness where nothing lives except those terrible lurking things that are menacing us.

So here’s the question: If we know where to look for the answers, will we have the guts to go there?

I know what I’m seeing is real. How can I explain what happened, what I saw? I can’t be the only one who is seeing this. Can I?

Am I losing control? Am I getting carried away with my obsessions?

I’m not crazy.

Something is happening to us.

I think something is coming from inside the Quarantine Zone… And no matter what the government tells us, I think we need to get as far away from here as possible… before it’s too late.

LAGRIMA

Something happened last night. I saw another woman herself. I know I can’t be the only person seeing all of this. First the club and now this. It’s no coincidence and it’s made me start to question everything that’s been going on.

I have spent all my time walking the city I love, trying to know it, trying to feel it. Trying to capture its soul in my photographs. it’s my job.

But a dark fog has settled over us now. Maybe no one else is paying attention. But my camera is. That’s why I need to share this. Why I’m writing this blog. So you can see what I see. I’m going to prove it to you. I’m going to chase it down and give it a name.

And there it is again. That SHADOW. It’s as if it’s willing her, pushing her. Forcing her hand.

She seemed more SCARED than suicidal. She looked sick. Then, before she did it… Frighteningly CALM.

THE STAIN

You should have seen her face. The way she looked at me. I’ve seen that look before.

I know that something happened to her in that club. I had to going back there.

In her dressing room amid the Various S&M props scattered about, and trash all over the floor.

SNAPSHOTS.

Candid windows into previous parties here.

Performers. Guests. Men, women. A variety of weird behaviors.

Then; faces scratched out or defaced. And among them… POST-IT NOTES. A litany of scrawled, cryptic, desperate musings.

And then if that weren’t enough I saw it in the reflection. On the wall behind me.

A STAIN.

The weirdest thing; as I moved toward it The STAIN seemed to almost… breathe!

I wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t seen it myself. Am I the only one seeing these things? Have you seen it too?

BONDAGE, DOMINANCE & SELF MUTILATION

I went to this pop-up, underground fetish club tonight. Bought my way in. I don’t know what I was expecting. Everyone there wears a mask but you get to see who they really are.

Are we all wearing masks now? We’re using them to hide from the truth. Are we pretending these plastic expressions are protecting us from things we don’t want to see. Trying to hide things we don’t want people to see.

I watch people. I watch what they do. And now I’m afraid.

There are places everywhere in this city where hostility is gathering. Fear is feeding on it. Anxiety is breeding in it.

This wasn’t a fetish club catering to clientele interested in fetishes and BDSM or a place for a socialising with like-minded people. It’s every bit as poisonous and as deadly as the club that was destroyed on New Years Eve, Nightshade, it’s namesake used by Macbeth to kill the invading troops.

There was this Geisha girl. She was captivating. Beautiful, but tormented at the same time. It was if my camera was drawn to her.

I went to the toilets, she was in there. Staring straight at my lens. Only she COULDN’T stare.

Something happened to her before I could get there. What she did was horrific. I still can’t believe what she did to herself. SOMETHING had to have made her do this. I have to find out what that something is… It’s effecting us all.

There in the corner of one frame… You can see it too right?

A DARK SHADOW.

What is THAT?

A smear? A flaw? Hovering over her shoulder. Is that a FACE there?

Take a look at the screen grab from my retouching software.

This is no fake. No digitally enhanced gimmick.

EVERYTHING’S CHANGED

I used to know this city. It’s people. I’ve spent my whole life photographing them.

The government keeps telling us the city’s safe, that no contamination has spread from the Quarantine Zone. But it doesn’t matter. So many people have left. Fleeing from something they can’t see…

I wanted to document what’s happening to the people here. But since the explosion, since the construction of the Quarantine Zone, my photographs are different.

We’re different.

Is it despair? Confusion? Rage? Fear?

Everything’s changed. I need to shine a light in the dark. See what crawls out.

ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE

I went to the scene of a murder today. I knew the people who died there, they feature in my exhibition. The news says he murdered his wife and his baby. Those poor people. I had a feeling something wasn’t right with him. I never imagined how bad.

Looking at him again, there’s something going on beneath these expressions.

The detective in charge tried to brush me aside. ‘Another day in paradise’ he glibly called it but he didn’t look so sure. Like he knew more than he was letting on.

If this is paradise then there’s lots of snakes lose in the garden.

Look closely. Something’s happening to us. Something raw. Something is loose among us. Something sinister. Something unimaginable.  Something we’re not ready to understand.

You can feel it, too, can’t you? Maybe you don’t want to admit it, but just take a look around. At the people next to you on the corner. The ones driving by in their cars. You’ll see it. Leering in a mirror’s reflection. Grinning at us. In the shadows of doorways and alleys. Just waiting its chance to cause chaos and violence.

IT MAKES YOU WONDER

The government keeps telling us the city is safe, that no contamination has spread from the Quarantine Zone.

I was there this evening and photographed birds as they flew around the perimeter wall, like it extended invisibly up into space. The birds never fly over it.  The military couldn’t care less about the birds but it makes you wonder. They definitely didn’t like me taking photos though but it’s not against the law. Not yet.

I believe that as long as we don’t know what really happened, or who was responsible, this tragedy will continue to haunt us, infecting us with even more anxiety and fear, provoking even more anger and malevolence, staining the fabric of our community with dark suspicions and cynical attitudes.

Why is no one asking; who benefits? Who comes out ahead? Who profits from the suffering? The chattering classes won’t ask. They prefer the ostrich alternative? But that just makes them complicit.

SOUL OF A CITY

These are the portraits featuring in my upcoming exhibition ‘SOUL OF A CITY’.

There’s something going on beneath these expressions. Something is not right with these people.

There are places everywhere in this city where hostility is gathering. It’s like some toxic fog settling over us. Fear is feeding on it.

Anger and confusion are breeding in it. I see it everywhere. This barely contained rage. This seething despair. Ever since New Year’s Eve. Ever since the Quarantine. Ever since the night that changed us all. Nothing is the same anymore. We have become different somehow.

Something’s happening to us.
